The best time to visit Coorg, month by month

People ask us "when should I come to Coorg?" almost every day, and the honest answer is: it depends on what you want the hills to be doing when you arrive. Coorg isn't a one-season destination. Here's how the year actually feels on the ground.

October to February — the clear season

This is peak season, and for good reason. The monsoon has washed the dust out of the air, the estates are a saturated green, and the valley views from places like Madikeri's Raja's Seat are at their sharpest. Mornings are cold enough for a jacket and a second filter coffee; afternoons are warm and dry.

It's the best window for first-time visitors and for anyone travelling with family. The trade-off is that everyone else knows it too — weekends around long holidays book out early, and tariffs are at their highest. If you can travel midweek, you'll find both better rates and emptier viewpoints.

March to May — coffee blossom and quiet

The secret season. In March, after the first pre-monsoon showers, the Arabica estates burst into white coffee blossom for a few days and the whole valley smells like jasmine. It's brief, unpredictable, and unforgettable if you catch it.

Days get warmer than people expect, but the estates stay cool under their shade trees, and the crowds thin out considerably. This is our favourite time to send couples to a stream-side cottage — you'll often have the plantation to yourself.

June to September — the monsoon

Coorg in the rains is not for everyone, and that's exactly why some people love it. The waterfalls — Abbey, Iruppu, Mallalli — are in full roar, the mist sits in the valleys until noon, and the whole place feels like a different planet.

Bring the right footwear, expect leeches on the trails, and accept that some views will be socked in. In return you get dramatic greenery, the lowest rates of the year, and estates that feel wonderfully remote. Book a stay with a covered verandah and a fireplace and let it pour.
